“Men and Books: From Microorganisms to Megaorganisms”

28.04. – 01.05.2014

Venue: Bildungshaus St. Hippolyt (AT)

Eybnerstraße 5, 3100 St. Pölten

The conservation of written documents is the essential precondition for any type of research. Equally, research activities are the quintessential prerequisite for advancing society. This interdependence and close correlation between research activities and social progress will be made visible on the example of Research on Protestantism within the conference “Men and Books: From Microorganisms to Megaorganisms”. Moreover, the rationalisation and clarification of the the pressing need for research in the field of conservation of written documents will form a major topic within this conference. Though microorganisms clearly are the main conflicting enemy when it comes to archival material and the stocks of libraries, decades of research have not yet proved capable of coping with these difficulties. A wide range of substances used to control the infestation of microorganisms, especially and primarily ethylene-oxide, are toxic to humans and highly controversialy discussed. Within this conference further focus will be put on the topics of

  • how digitization offers new solutions but also effects new challenges,
  • new developments in the field of preservation and conservation research activities as well as
  • codicological research results will be presented.

The conference is open to archivists, librarians, conservators and everyone who is interested in preserving our European heritage.

There is no conference fee.
